Frequently
Asked Questions
When is the deadline? For the United States and Canadian competition, the deadline is September 15. For the Latin American and Caribbean competition, the deadline is December 1. Is the announced deadline final? Yes. Late applications will be returned. What happens if the deadline falls on a weekend? If the deadline falls on a weekend, we will accept applications through the following Monday. When should supporting material be sent in? Applicants in painting, sculpture, graphic art, and writing should submit supporting materials with the application by September 15 in the competition for the United States and Canada or December 1 in the competition for Latin America and the Caribbean. Applicants in music composition, photography, film, video, and choreography should not submit examples of their work with the application but should submit them separately, to arrive between November 1 and December 15 in the competition for the United States and Canada, and between February 1 and March 15 in the competition for Latin America and the Caribbean. When do the application forms become available? June 15. Is a C.V. or resume acceptable as part 1 of the application (a brief narrative account of your career)? It is acceptable but not recommended. Those failing to write a narrative will be competing, perhaps at a disadvantage, with the great majority of applicants who do comply with our request. How long should the supplementary statements be? The career narrative and the list of publications, exhibitions, etc., may be of whatever length is required but should be kept as brief as possible. The statement of plans, on the other hand, must not exceed three pages (and please bear in mind that smaller fonts are hard for our advisers to read). Do not pad out lists with reviews, unless they are review articles or have some special relevance to your statement of plans. Do not send reviews as part of your supporting materials. How does one apply? Please write to the Guggenheim Foundation at 90 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016. Application forms will be mailed out starting June 15. You can also download an Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) application form by answering a questionnaire on this Web site beginning June 15. Can I apply if I am just starting my career? Fellowships are meant for advanced professionals in mid-career, not those just beginning their careers. Without a significant record of accomplishment, beginners will have a hard time competing. Are there age limits for eligibility? No. Older applicants are generally expected to have accomplished more than younger applicants, but all applicants must also show promise of further creative work. All applicants are expected to be advanced professionals in mid-career. If I have a Green Card, am I eligible to apply? Yes. If, however, you are a citizen of a country in Latin America or the Caribbean and usually write in Spanish, Portuguese, or French, you should consider applying in the Latin American and Caribbean competition. If I live in Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands, in which competition am I eligible to apply? You may apply in either competition. If, however, you usually write in Spanish, Portuguese, or French, you should consider applying in the Latin American and Caribbean competition. Who makes the best reference? Those who are familiar with your recent work and can comment on the course of your career as a whole will make the best references. The worst references are often those whom you have failed to contact before putting their names on our application form. Do I need four names or may I send in five or six names of references? To be competitive you should submit four names of references. If you submit more than four names, we will use only the first four listed. Can someone send an unsolicited reference letter? Yes. But we prefer, and go to great expense, to send requests for letters of reference ourselves, since we think that requests coming directly from the Foundation may elicit more frank and useful comments. Special circumstances may, however, require that applicants take their own measures to ensure that references important to their applications reach the Foundation in time. If I reapply, will the Foundation bring forward past letters of reference? No, the Foundation does not bring forward letters of reference from previous years. (But applicants may, if they wish, name the same references they have named before, and those references may of course choose to send us the same letters they sent before.) When are the Fellowship awards announced? Results of the United States and Canadian competition are announced publicly in the first or second week of April, but applicants will be notified of their success in the competition in the middle of March. Results of the Latin America and Caribbean competition are announced publicly in the first or second week of June, but applicants will be notified of their success in the competition in the middle of May. How much money is awarded? See General Information. Must I be taking sabbatical leave to apply? No. But it is expected that Fellows will be substantially free of their regular duties during their Fellowship periods. When could I start my Fellowship? If you are selected in the United States and Canadian competition you may take up your Fellowship as early as the end of April and in the Latin America and Caribbean competition as early as the end of June. What are the Foundation's hours? The Foundation is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays (between Memorial Day and Labor Day the Foundation closes at 1 p.m. on Fridays.) What is the Foundation's cross street? The Foundation is located between 39th and 40th Streets. home page |
